A drill press<\/strong> is a stationary power tool used to create accurate, repeatable holes in wood and other approved materials. Unlike a handheld drill, the drill press holds the drill bit in a fixed vertical position while the user lowers it into a workpiece. It can be used for woodworking, furniture making, fabrication, and projects requiring consistently positioned or precisely sized holes.<\/p>\n

The workpiece is positioned on the drill press table and secured with a clamp, vise, or appropriate fixture<\/strong>. The rotating drill bit is then lowered into the material using the feed handle. Depending on the project, users may also adjust the table position, drilling depth, and spindle speed.<\/p>\n

Compatible Materials<\/h3>\n

A drill press can work with solid wood, plywood, and other approved materials<\/strong> when equipped with the appropriate drill bit and settings. Different materials and bit sizes require different spindle speeds and workholding methods.<\/p>\n

Before You Begin<\/h3>\n

The rotating bit and chuck can catch loose objects or unsecured material. Wear eye protection, secure long hair, remove jewelry, and do not wear gloves or loose clothing around the rotating spindle.<\/strong> Always clamp or otherwise securely hold the workpiece\u2014never rely on your hands alone. OSHA identifies hand-holding stock as a common drill-press hazard because a bit can catch the material and cause it to rotate uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

Remove the chuck key before starting the machine and wait for the spindle to stop completely before making adjustments or clearing debris.<\/p>\n
