March 26, 2025 – K-12 STEM educators from around the Linn-Benton region gathered in the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub’s makerspace, The MILL, for Decimals and Donuts. This was the first in a series of five math-centered professional development opportunities we’re calling “PD Unplugged.” These low-key professional development opportunities promote networking, skill-sharing, and playful exploration of hands-on approaches to STEAM integration, all while enjoying tasty treats and some VIP treatment.
“’PD Unplugged’ mirrors the ‘unconference’ approach, offering a structured yet open space that fosters organic collaboration. This format provides a dynamic and supportive setting where educators can connect, explore, and actively workshop their ideas in a seriously playful environment,” said Sarah Whiteside, Director of the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub, on the design of the event series.
The educators in attendance teach at local middle and high schools. When asked what they hoped to gain from the experience, the majority of the educators answered that they hoped to find methods and resources to help students catch up to grade-level standards in math and reading comprehension, as well as practice critical problem-solving skills and develop good teamwork habits.
Teachers had time to discuss issues their students face and access relevant resources to prepare them for a tech-centered workforce. “I try to teach about coding and then find that the school’s network blocks the programming needed for my lesson,” said one teacher.
Join us for the second PD Unplugged event, ‘Tangents and Tortas,’ on April 10, from 3-6 PM. Attendees will receive a gift card, enjoy refreshments, and get assistance with signing up as patrons of the newly relaunched Educator Lending Library. Secure your spot by filling out the Tangents and Tortas registration form.
