The DeWalt Random Orbital Sander is a handheld power tool used to smooth wood surfaces, remove minor imperfections, and prepare materials for painting, staining, or finishing. Its round sanding pad moves in a combination of spinning and orbital motions, helping create an even finish while reducing visible sanding marks. It is commonly used for surface preparation.

To operate, a sanding disc is attached to the sander's hook-and-loop pad. The user places the sander flat against the material and guides it slowly across the surface, allowing the abrasive disc to remove thin layers of material. Different sandpaper grits are used to gradually refine the surface, typically progressing from coarse to fine.

Compatible Materials

The DeWalt orbital sander is primarily used with solid wood, plywood, and MDF. Depending on the abrasive disc and application, it may also be used on certain painted or finished surfaces. Sanding discs are available in different grits, with lower numbers removing material more aggressively and higher numbers producing smoother finishes.

Before You Begin

Sanding generates fine airborne dust that can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. Wear eye and hearing protection, use appropriate dust collection, and wear respiratory protection when required. Secure loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair.

Inspect the sanding disc before use and ensure it is properly attached. Keep the sander flat against the material and avoid applying excessive pressure, which can damage the surface or reduce sanding performance. Disconnect the power source before changing sanding discs or performing maintenance, and allow the pad to stop completely before setting the tool down.

New to using an orbital sander? Start with a piece of scrap wood and medium-grit sandpaper to practice applying light, even pressure and moving steadily across the surface. Progress to finer grits to achieve a smooth finish suitable for painting or staining.
