The Sawgrass SG500 is a desktop printer designed specifically for sublimation applications. Unlike a standard inkjet printer, it uses specialized inks to create transfers that are applied to compatible materials using a heat press. The SG500 prints media up to 8.5 × 14 inches from its standard tray.
A digital design is printed onto compatible transfer paper using specialized Sawgrass inks. The printed transfer is then positioned against a sublimation-compatible blank and heated with a heat press according to the material's requirements. During sublimation, heat allows the dye to become permanently embedded into the compatible surface.
Compatible Materials
Traditional sublimation works best with polyester fabrics and specially coated sublimation-ready hard surfaces. Common blanks include polyester shirts, mugs, coasters, ornaments, signs, and other products specifically labeled for sublimation.
Before You Begin
Use only the correct ink, paper, and settings for the printing system. Avoid touching freshly printed areas, and follow manufacturer guidance for handling inks and supplies.
New to sublimation? Start with a simple design and a flat sublimation-ready blank to become familiar with printing, positioning, time, temperature, and pressure.
